課程概述

Course Description
The main goals of this course are (1) to teach you more effective listening skills – this will be done mainly through assigned audio and video file-based listening exercises, and daily independent echo practice; and (2) to improve your pronunciation, starting from cognitive understanding of the mechanics of pronunciation, to daily practice to solidify and fully automate the correct forms, to class performances of scenes from television series.

*This course is elective, but strongly recommended for incoming DFLL freshmen who scored 70% or less on the Pronunciation Placement Test given on September 12, 2013. Other DFLL students are welcome as well.

課程目標
Course Objectives
Languages are best learned through listening and imitating good models of the spoken language. A major weakness in English education in Taiwan is an emphasis on grammar learning through rules, vocabulary learning from a printed page, in which the learner guesses at the correct sound, and a corresponding lack of practice listening to and imitating good audio models. This class will attempt to help fill in this gap by giving students guidance in how to listen, how to pronounce accurately, and how to learn and continue learning independently through life. Emphasis will be placed on cultivating active new habits to overwrite previous faulty, passive ones.
課程要求
Requirements:
Class attendance (more than 3 unexcused absences or five tardinesses are grounds for not passing the course); class participation; written and audio assignments; and class performances. Students are required to do daily listening and echo practice independently, to maintain a listening log, and to submit class notes and notes on the assigned CET 師德articles weekly. There will be no mid-term, but there will be occasional quizzes, oral tests, and a final exam.

Grading
100%
Grades will be calculated based on class attendance and punctuality, class participation, class notes, listening logs, homework, class performances, scores on quizzes and the final exam, effort put in and progress made, and attitude. The weight assigned to each will vary with actual course content and with the individual student – areas where the student has made more effort and improved most will be given somewhat greater weight where possible.
